The Royal Society is reviewing the current state of scientific publishing in the context of the policy developments and disruptions that are possible in the next 15 years.

The review, which we will publish, aims to propose actions and opportunities that can be implemented to ensure that a globally affordable, efficient, and effective publication system supports the scientific endeavour.

Effective and trustworthy publication of research papers in the scientific disciplines is critical to generate trust in these disciplines by professional and public audiences in an increasingly ‘fragmented and fractured’ world.

The potential impacts of new information technologies on the conduct, publication and dissemination of research are massive. These technologies offer both great opportunities for improving scientific discovery, publication and dissemination, and create substantial threats to the integrity of these activities.
